National and International advice on COVID-19
The Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection have deployed a new benefit scheme for those who have lost employment due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Students who have lost employment due to the pandemic are eligible to receive this payment. The payment is valued at €203 per week for a period of 6 weeks.

General UCC FAQ
The 2020-2021 start date for most Taught Programmes and most 1st year students is 28th September 2020. A graphic of the Key Dates 2020/2021 can be found on the Student Examinations and Records webpage.
Some programmes traditionally have earlier starts and these can also be found on the Student Examinations and Records webpage.
All on-campus activity is subject to the prevailing public-health advice.

Yes. The Irish Government announced that on 12 March that all higher education institutions should close. Following this directive UCC closed the campus. The safety and welfare of our students and staff is paramount.
Online teaching and learning is being provided for students.
Critical services (including critical research infrastructure) will be maintained. UCC staff are working remotely to the maximum extent possible during this period, in line with the Government advice. Please agree your remote working arrangements with your relevant line management. A guide to remote working has been prepared and is available to all staff.

As we plan a resumption of activities in line with the Government’s Return to Work Safely Protocol it is important to emphasise that the safety of our students and staff is paramount.
In the past number of months, we have worked together with our Student Union. We will approach the next steps collaboratively and keep our students informed at each step. As we take these steps, a shared responsibility is essential to protect against the spread of Covid-19.

Hybrid learning combines online and face-to-face elements such as offering online lectures for some class groupings and offering face-to-face seminars, tutorials and laboratory and field classes for smaller groups. As much face-to-face teaching and learning as is feasible will be provided, subject to prevailing public health requirements (which may continue to evolve over the course of the academic year).

Exams, Resits, and Study FAQ
As part of the university’s policy of no academic disadvantage, students may apply to resit spring/semester 2 examinations without incurring a penalty which means you do not have to pay a fee and the exam will not be capped.
The best mark achieved will be taken into account when calculating your overall mark and grade.
Closing date for Mitigation

Due to the unprecedented circumstances with the COVID-19 virus, students required to sit Autumn Supplemental Exams in 2020 will not be charged an examination re-entry fee.
We can confirm that, in light of current government policy, all supplemental examinations will be online.
All exams will take place between 31 July and 14 August.
An examination timetable will be available in mid-July. If you have a query relating to your examination format, please contact your module coordinator in the first instance.
The library has created a dedicated information portal for all pressing updates to library services during the COVID-19 closure.

The portal also contains a link to the library’s Canvas page for learning content from our regularly-offered library workshops. You’ll also find information about our expanding ebook collections during the closure.
Please keep the items you have borrowed until the library reopens. You will not incur any overdue fines during the university closure.
Access to OneSearch, the library catalogue, CORA and other web-based interfaces are all accessible from the library website for users conducting online research. All online library collections such as electronic journals, electronic books and online databases are accessible remotely via the library website for UCC affiliates: https://libguides.ucc.ie/library.
Preqin, a market research database collection, is the only exception to this, as this resource is only accessible within the Boole Library, and therefore not available during the University closure.
Physical Recourses - Not Accessible
It will not be possible to access physical collections in main lending, high demand and restricted from Friday 13 March. Borrowing and returning of books will also not be possible.
Library users will be able to renew items already on loan by logging in to their Library Account, detailed at: https://libguides.ucc.ie/libraryessentials/mylibraryaccount. Any borrowed items due back before March 29th will automatically be assigned a new return due date for when the University
There is a limited library staff service available online and remotely. The Library’s Ask Us knowledge base is accessible remotely at https://askus.booleweb.ucc.ie/index.php/. The library’s Online Ask Us Live Chat support service from the library website is available during regular business hours Monday – Friday, 10am-5pm (March 17th excepted). You can also contact the library via email at firstname.lastname@example.org The library will continue to monitor any queries and communications. Consultation services from various library service points (Liaison Librarians, Archives and Special Collections, Research Data Services, CORA) will be available remotely.

Yes. The library has reinstated a partial interlibrary loan service which will allow us to request digital copies of materials from other libraries.
Due to continued closure of library buildings we are unable to process requests for print items. However, we will investigate the purchase of e-books as alternatives where possible. Interlibrary loan charges are waived until August 31st 2020 except for material sourced from the British Library.

Student Placement and Studying Abroad FAQ

It is UCC’s intention to continue to secure work placements for students in 2020 / 2021. We know that work placement is an important part of your programme of study here at UCC, however we will remain faithful to and consistent with Educational-sector, Public Health and Government guidelines and recommendations in place at that time. Please note that if you have a medical condition or for any reason do not wish to go on work placement as a result of Covid-related issues and complications you will be able to take an alternative option. For further details on this you should contact your placement coordinator/manager.

The Covid-19 situation is fast evolving. The university is working with partner institutions to assess the viability of travel in line with relevant travel restrictions and guidelines that apply for destinations. Your programme coordinator will be in contact with you with further details.
Research Student FAQ
During this time of unprecedented uncertainty the University is keen to do everything in our power to support you and to facilitate the progress of your research.
Many of you are currently having to take a break from carrying out experiments or research because of lack of access to UCC facilities, research participants, or travel restrictions. Your Supervisory team is best placed to advise on how to maintain progress with your work and writing, both now and when circumstances change.
Keep in touch
We encourage you to keep in regular contact (e.g. by email/Skype) with your Supervisory team and establish a routine for remote supervision. Many of us are using Microsoft Teams (which is available on your Office 365 site) to set up team meetings. It is a really useful resource to share documents, screens, and notes, as well as teleconference.

The UCC procedure for viva voce examinations during the closure is available from the Graduate Studies Office.
The Irish Government announced from the 12th March that all higher education institutions should close. This follows the World Health Organisation’s declaration of the COVID-19 situation as a worldwide pandemic.
Based on the foregoing developments, the University has suspended field work in Ireland and abroad until further notice.
Field work includes for example: door data collection for research and work on or from boats.
We understand that this decision, based on the direction from the Government, will inconvenience those due to undertake field work in the coming weeks. The situation is regrettable but unfortunately necessary. The safety and welfare of our students and staff is the highest priority for the University and the decision was taken with that in mind.
Whilst the Government’s direction extends to the 19 April, we can anticipate that the COVID-19 situation may continue to evolve. In the interests of forward planning for students and staff, we confirm that the decision regarding field work will be reviewed again on the 1st May 2020.
UCC will ensure students on taught programmes are not academically disadvantaged by cancellation of any fieldwork or a field trip as a result of this decision and alternative arrangements for the current semester will be made for a student’s academic requirements where necessary.
Research students should liaise with their supervisors to organise their work in a manner which minimises the impact of this suspension of fieldwork on their research.

Do not leave your home. You should self-isolate in a closed room and follow your Doctor's advice when they return your telephone call.

IF YOU DEVELOP SYMPTOMS:
You must also act promptly if you develop symptoms to suggest you may have COVID-19. If you develop symptoms you will need to self-isolate and telephone your Doctor, your local Out of Hours service, or UCC Student Health on 4902311 if you are in Cork and not yet registered with a GP.
Do not go to a GP surgery, Pharmacy, Accident and Emergency Department or Hospital. Telephone your Dr. The Dr will assess you over the phone. If they think you need to be tested for COVID-19, your Doctor will arrange a test.

You should contact your own Dr. GP or Student Health if you are uncertain as to your level of risk.
UCC Campus is closed in line with the government directive of 12th of March 2020. During this closure period and over the Summer months, UCC Student Health is operating a restricted service. Where possible consultations and advice are conducted via telephone. If the clinician on duty recommends that a physical examinations is required and that the matter cannot be dealt with through telephone consultation, attendance at a healthcare facility will be arranged and/or advised. This may be at your local COVID-19 HUB, an Accident and Emergency Department, an Outpatient Clinic or in the Student Health Centre. You may also be directed to attend for a COVID-19 test at one of the local COVID-19 testing centres - in Cork this is based in Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
Please do not attend the Student Health Centre, your GP, an Accident and Emergency Dept, a GP Out of Hours Service or COVID HUB or testing Centre without prior arrangement. Telephone your Dr first.

The date scheduled for your booster dose was chosen as the optimum date to achieve long-lasting immunity, however it will still be possible to administer a booster dose in Student Health after the original scheduled date without needing to re-start the whole immunisation schedule again. Please contact Student Health on 4902311 if you believe you are due a booster dose of a vaccine.
For Healthcare Students:
UCC Student Health is in the process of arranging appointments over June, July and August for Healthcare Students due to attend in class groups for the final doses of Hepatitis B or Hepatitis B blood tests. UCC Student Health will contact the students involved directly via their student e-mails to offer them an individual appoitnment time.
Following the news that all UCC Counselling appointments have been cancelled in the light of the ongoing pandemic, we are working on alternative ways to best support your mental health.
UCC Student Counselling & Development (SCD) Service 2020
The Student Counselling & Development telesupport service has been established in order to assist students in maintaining healthy emotional wellbeing while counselling appointments are not possible due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The service is available to all registered students who continue to reside in Ireland free of charge.

The global COVID-19 pandemic is a rapidly changing situation, and since its emergence we have sought to keep you supported and informed. This morning we are writing with an important message.
Recently in Ireland, there has been an increase in the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19. Furthermore, it is anticipated that flight restrictions may be implemented across the European Union in the coming weeks.
Many of you are living away from support networks such as family, relatives and friends. Support networks such as this will be vital to any student who may become unwell as a result of a COVID-19 infection or who may be required to self-isolate.
Your safety and welfare
Accordingly, for your safety and well being, the University and Campus Accommodation are requesting that all residents of Campus Accommodation who are in a position to do so, return home as soon as is possible and endeavour to depart their accommodation by Saturday 21st March.
Students departing Campus Accommodation as a result of this decision will receive a pro rata refund of their accommodation fee from the 21st March or their date of departure (whichever is the later) for the balance of their contract term. Your safety and welfare is our priority and this decision is necessary given the quickly changing COVID-19 situation.
We realise that some of you may not have the option to leave Campus Accommodation at this time for a variety of reasons. If this is the case for you, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org to declare that you need to remain in Campus Accommodation after Saturday 21st March stating the reasons why (using the process outlined below). We want to reassure students that residents with a legitimate reason for remaining may do so and Campus Accommodation will remain available to such students for the remainder of this academic year.
The University has advised that students who return home can be reassured that they will not be disadvantaged in terms of academic assessment; alternative arrangements for the current semester will be made for them.
We anticipate that you may have queries. This email inbox is being monitored by several team members to ensure prompt attention. We ask for your understanding while we deal with a potentially large volume of queries. Yes. International students who are returning home but are unable to take a return flight home before the 21st March can remain in their Campus Accommodation until their upcoming departure date.
You can indicate to us that you need to remain. Please complete the process outlined below for declaring that you need to remain in Campus Accommodation after Saturday 21st March.

Reasons why a student may have reason to remain include:
- You are an international student who is unable to return home at this time due to barriers to travel, visa restrictions, inability to pay for the cost of return airfare to your home country or other reasons;
- You have no other accommodation available to you in Ireland;
- You are a confirmed case of COVID-19 or have been directed by a medical professional to self-isolate;
- A member of your home residence is a confirmed case of COVID-19 or is immuno-compromised;
- You have academic requirements which require you to remain proximate to campus beyond Saturday 21st March (such as final year clinical assessments for medicine students or laboratory or research requirements which require on campus attendance); or
- Your home residence is an area with extremely limited internet connectivity.
Provide also the name of the General Practitioner (Doctor) who you have registered with in Cork. View the list of General Practitioners in the vicinity of the campus.
Provide brief details of your personal support plan including contact information for a friend or a colleague in Cork who can be contacted in case of emergency.
Please note that Campus Accommodation can only accept requests/communications from the resident/contract holder.
