Niall Connolly

Brooklyn based singer-songwriter Niall Connolly returns to Ireland to embark on a 17-date tour where he will perform songs from his new album 'Dream Your Way Out of This One'. Niall is accompanied by musicians who have performed with the likes of Leonard Cohen, REM and Glen Hansard. The band will play Coughlan’s, Cork on 29 September. Niall talks to us about his time at UCC and how the Live Music Society introduced him to the music business.

Course/subjects studied in UCC

I majored in English with a minor in Psychology. I also studied Sociology and Spanish in first year. So, naturally, I'm working as a songwriter now.

Best memory of UCC

I have great memories of walking the campus chatting with friends. Early spring with the cherry trees in bloom. The moment of beauty before the exam terror set in.

How has your time at UCC helped you to get to where you are now?

Studying literature and poetry intensely undoubtedly influenced my writing. My time in the live music society gave me a realistic introduction to the mechanics of the music business. I'm still very close to some of the friends I made in my first month in UCC and they continue to influence and inspire me.

What is your advice to current UCC students?

The library is your friend. Stay in touch with your college friends. You'll be helping each other out professionally and personally in places and ways that might surprise you.

What person/people at UCC had the most positive influence on you?

Professor Graham Allen and Professor Alex Davis. Both were excellent professors who made time for their students. It didn't hurt that Professor Graham Allen was and is a big music lover too.

Were you involved in any Clubs or Societies?

Yes, I was hugely involved in the Live Music Society. I loved it. We put on a lot of concerts on and off campus and released a compilation cd of college bands. One of the bands had a young aspiring law student/ actor Cillian Murphy on guitar.

Favourite UCC legend or superstition

I'm still afraid to walk across the quad in case my degree is revoked.
